I'm confused whether BT-20 cell line is from primary or metastatic origin. One article says it's primary and other says it's from pleural effusion. Does anyone have an idea about it?
Hi Enas, based on the description on ATCC website, the BT-20 cell line is:
'This breast tumor line was established by E.Y. Lasfargues and L. Ozzello in 1958 by isolation and cultivation of cells spilling out of the tumor when it was cut in thin slices. '
Its a good question because the fact that a cell line is not from a metastatic site is not noted, while it is noted if it originate from such origin.
Example: MDA-MB-231 (also from breast carcinoma) is annotated in the Cellosaurus:
https://web.expasy.org/cellosaurus/CVCL_0062
DiseaseBreast adenocarcinoma (NCIt: C5214) Derived from metastatic site: Pleural effusion.
while the BT-20 entry only says:
DiseaseInvasive ductal carcinoma, not otherwise specified (NCIt: C4194)
with no metastatic origin mentionned.
Having said that it is always a good idea to go back to the original paper when you are not sure: lack of an information item could also due to an annotation error or an ommission.
But for BT-20 there is no issue, the original paper (1st reference in the Cellosaurus entry) states "The tumor tissue was dissected from the breasts immediately after mastectomy."
And if you are using BT-20 you may want to lean more about Etienne Lasfargue in:
