I am a little confused about the nomenclature of the cell line referred to in the citations of ATCC -CRL 2467 as the BV-2 cell line. The BV-2 cell-line as described in ACCEGEN website is derived from C57BL/6 mouse. The CRL-2467 (EOC 2 in ATCC website) is from a C3H/Hej mouse. Can someone working with microglia cell-line clarify this.

All EOC cell lines: EOC2, ECO20 and EOC13.31 are different cells from BV-2. There is a notice on ATCC website on EOC20 that these cells are different from BV-2.

ATCC-CRL2467 is not a BV-2 cell line. Though EOC-2 and BV-2 are microglial cells, they both are not the same.
BV2 cells are immortalized by v-raf/v-myc carrying J2 retrovirus. BV2 cells act as an appropriate alternative to the primary cultures. It was found that in response to LPS, 90% of genes induced by BV2 cells were also induced by primary microglia.
On the other hand, EOC cell lines which include EOC2, EOC13.31 and EOC20 are not derived by genetic means but are spontaneously immortalized. The EOC microglial cell lines display similar features but require colony-stimulating factor-1 (CSF-1) supplementation during culture.
