I am planning a few experiments on skin microbiome in mice, and it requires me to deplete the microbiome on the skin. I have come across a few antibiotic treatments, but not on the skin so far. I would like to know if its doable by applying the antibiotics on the skin.
I would be glad for any comments or suggestions on this!
What part of the mouse's body are you trying to study the microbiome of?
A mouse has fur over most of its body but some parts are not so covered.
It would be useful to know what kind of experiments you are planning.
Have you studied the microbiome of normal mice? Did you do that on the fur or shaved skin? Would also be useful to know the purpose of the experiments.

Thank you for you reply. I will be mostly studying the dorsal region. I will be irradating the mice. I will shave the fur and then follow up with my experiments.

Thank you for the answer. I have decided to use Chlorhexidine+alcohol scrubs. however I still wonder if the applications would cause any effect on the skin like swelling or any abnormal phenotype?

I used 2% Chlorhexidine in 70% isopropyl alcohol. Treated the mice three time a week, for my experimental setup.
