I just discovered today that the publisher of a journal in which I had an article published in 2016 has reprinted that article in a huge four-volume compendium (listing no editor).
I am sure that our copyright contract gave them permission to do this, but should I treat it as a separate publication in my CV?
I do not believe that any changes have been made to the text of the original.

If it is the same paper it cannot be considered as a new publication. In the bibliographic details of the paper in your CV you could add a note that this publication was included in the compendium too.
On the list of publications on your institute's website I'd list both essays, adding a note informing the reader about the fact that the latest publication had been a reprint of the article published in 20XX. You can be more detailed there than if you'd list your publications when applying for a new position for instance.
In your CV resp. List of Publications that you add to your application for a new position you'd usually present a list of Selected Publications. Therein you could list the old and the new version, including the note concerning the reprint, but I'd rather not do that. I'd choose one of the two, depending on the position you are applying for.
If you prefer to inform about the journal the earlier essay had been published in, because it goes down well with the new position, I'd choose that. If you are short on recent publications in that year your essay had been reprinted, I'd rather list that. Naturally I'd add a note about the essay having been in print twice, but I'd only list one version at a time.
Include both versions as they are 2 different printed works. Indicate the 2nd paper as a "2nd edition published there and there". Add the DOI and original URLs links to the edition websites.

As a reminder, if the author republishes his article (identical or slightly modified) years later it is called canibalism and this is PLAGIARISM.
Ali Akhaddar Note that the publisher of the original journal selected my paper for republishing in a compendium without contacting me first. I did not resubmit it, in any way. So you could say that this choice by the publisher was a case of additional review of the paper published earlier.
My school does not publish lists of faculty publications on its website. My CV is my personal document, which I can provide to people who need to see it. As a tenured senior faculty member, I will not be applying for other jobs, etc. :-)
I have included this republication as an entry in my document, but with a note saying that it is a republication, as opposed to new scholarship. I appreciate all of your advice.

If I were you, I would decide whether to include the reprint (rpt.) on the basis of the reading audience for my Curriculum Vitae.
One of my chapters in my book on Nobel poet laureate W.B. Yeats appears intact in an online venue, and the two men who were editors-in-chief of the project contacted me first to notify me and added the proviso that if I objected to let them know. I felt honored to have my Yeats book achieve recognition so I gave my verbal permission. In fact, they asked which chapter I would choose to go online, and when I replied, the chapter on AT THE HAWK'S WELL, they said, "Are you sure?" ["Yes"]. You will probably agree that you would have preferred that your work had not been published without notifying you first, which is understandable.
Depending on the circumstances, you could just add "rpt. in _______" to the bibliographical citation for the original publication, which indicates additional peer review acclamation. If you wish to preserve a chronological structure for your CV, I see no reason why you couldn't list the reprint version as a separate item, in which case you ought to indicate the initial publication's source information, showing where the second item listed is "from _______".
Another consideration is that the subscribers to the journal, on one hand, and the compendium, on the other hand, may be different. Therefore, I define your appearance in the compendium as a bona fide second publication. As you observe, however, you should probably include the publisher of the compendium in your CV and format the second entry as a chapter in a book. A conference paper I delivered at the International Comparative Literature Association Paris Congress was selected for publication in one of a multi-volume set of Proceedings as part of the organizational protocols, the assumption being that presenters intended their papers to be, and were disappointed if they were not, published. Thus, academic publishing is multilateral and in your situation, I would most definitely list your paper as a journal article and as a chapter in a compendium! Best wishes Michael & to all, Nancy
