I will be teaching online classes on the spring semester. Students prepare by reading the textbook and watching online videos, then in the learning management system (LMS) they use discussion groups to show higher-order thinking.
In some ways, this seems like Flipped Learning.
Philosophically (not just in my case) can a 100% online class be taught with Flipped instructional design? If not, why? If so, what advice do you have?
It sure can. You can also combine it with peer review - in that sense you first make the students to master the educational content, then produce new content, based on the acquired knowledge. In that sense it is analogous to flipped class. In fact, with educational resources available online blended learning in terms of flipped class is a very good approach.
What is your role as a teacher in such a course? For me flipped classroom (FC) is all about changing the roles of teachers and students, and it concerns a movement towards more interactivity between the both. In more concrete terms, one of the most fundamental aspects of FC, for me at least, is that teachers use their time to scaffold students with those tasks that they need most support with (for instance problem-solving or analysis) or that are most supportive for the development of higher-order skills. After all, from a sociocultural point of view, the higher-order skills are developed in _activities_ where students interact with and are scaffolded by more competent peers and tutors. Such conditions for learning are most of the time not created when students act as passive consumers of information in lectures.
I agree with @Jalal Nouri's answer... flipped classroom has to do with changing the roles of teachers and students... but it also has to do with the change of roles of learning spaces. For an online only course... you can have more interactivity using asynchronous/synchronous technology then students in their own time would work on the learning resources.
