But use of smartphones during class time often means text messaging and other distractions from what is actually going on in class. Ask a text messaging student a question, and the typical answer is "huh?" because the student has not been paying attention.

Even when students are using their phones for legitimate classroom uses, like note taking, the research shows that hand-written notes are remembered better.

For those reasons, my academic program area will likely ban use of smartphones in all classes this coming school year.
