I will start with the explanation what I do. I have been doing research in the field of mathematical modeling of bioreactors for over a decade. Now I work in the industry as mathematical model specialist and I use machine learning in engineering applications. In my opinion AI an ML are not directly related with any life science discipline, so you should study AI and ML models first as an independent field. Afterwards, as it is relateviely new field (in terms of application to other disciplines) you can try to find, read, study or even reproduce research from scientific papers. Probably there are several commonly used models which are used in biostatistics, and you should focus on them.

Soon, I will write some blog articles about machine learning in scientific and engineeing applications. I was also thinking about application of machine learning and neural networks in kinetic studies of microbiological processs. You can find me on linkedin if you are interested.
