I have submitted an article for possible publication in an SSCI journal in May, 2021. The status of the article is under review since the June, 2021.
Please advise from your experiences, Should i ask the editors about the status of my paper or wait?
As one of my colleague told me that once she emailed to a journal about the status of her article after three months of submission and she got a straight rejection in couple of days.

Some take a month or two, while others might take up to six months or more. Statistics/Mathematics journals, as you accurately noticed, typically take longer to complete, and can take up to a year at times.

Sure, you can communicate about the progress of your manuscript. It is the job and responsibility of journal to update you about the same.
No se tiene que recibir un rechazo por preguntar por el estado de un artículo. Eso sería una mala praxis por parte del equipo editorial.
