I would like to focus on whether innovation culture is sustainable in organisations. Specifically, in a for profit organisation & a not-for profit organisation. However, I am struggling to formulate 3 sub- questions that relate to this notion/research problem. Can anyone provide me with some good sub research question suggestions?
This is more my thesis, would be much appreciated.
What are the factors of the innovation - cultural (open, collaborative, team, etc.) and non-cultural (e.g. hiring policy, salaries, bonuses, available resources, industry)?
What are the factors of company culture influencing the innovation (empowerment, collaboration, open office spaces, etc.)?
What is the dynamic of innovation? Does innovation have a natural fluctuation (this is my guess) or can follow a trend or can be constant?
Do the attributes of company culture supports sustain innovation differ by industries (e.g. high-tech, lean, research, pharmaceutical, film)?
What is the best strategy for a company:
a.) Sustain innovation internally?
b.) One time significant innovation (project) patented and used?
c.) Buy patents from innovative companies, modify for commercialization?
d.) Something else, e.g. combination the above?

Agreed with Robert that Sustain innovation internally and focus on long term multi utility aspects with periodic refinement or modification with different combination is best strategy.
Your question is whether an innovation culture is sustainable in organisations (companies, for profit and not for profit). I would rather turn this around and wonder whether organisations (for profit and not for profit) will be able to remain relevant without pro-actively developing and nurturing an innovation culture. We live in world that is highly dynamic with very rapid changes in demands for products, tools, and needs. Look at companies that maybe had insufficiently anticipated change, and forgot to innovate (e.g. Eastman Kodak Company). Other examples include for instance TomTom and Garmin, whose core business was the production of navigation devices, but they realised that the sustainability of their companies depends on how they can offer GPS services rather than GPS devices. With a need to transit towards green economies, i believe many sectors (incl energy sector) will need an innovation culture to be able to survive. Some possible sub-questions:
What are key characteristics of an innovation culture?
How is an innovation culture introduced and sustained?
what are benefits and 'costs' of establishing an innovation culture?
Besides identifying sub-questions, I would suggest that your study could make an in depth anaylsis of few selected case studies - based on a well defined hypothesis.
