What is the difference between the group and individual tests?
Different children can perform differently on group or individual assessments. A primary difference is that group testing tends to be more affordable than individual testing, while individual testing tends to be more in-depth.
For group testing your child will typically take tests in a classroom with other children, and you will receive a one-page printout of results.
For individual testing your child will typically see an examiner on a one-to-one basis for several hours (usually three), and you will receive a detailed report of several pages offering an interpretation of test results with recommendations. You will also have a 30-minute feedback where the examiner will explain the results and answer any questions you may have. The child does not have to be present
Both systems are very effective if used by skilled professionals. For younger groups there may be a need for additional support for the teacher like monitors or auxiliary teachers. For older students, teachers can pick up some students from the groups to support him with other students.
Dear Godwin Jejeti, I am in support of group work/assignment.
There are some interesting idioms used for signifying the advantage of group work than individual works.
· “Unity is strength”
· “More hands make for lighter work.”
· “Two heads are better than one.”
· “The more the merrier.”
These saying supports the benefits of group work will to be more productive, creative, and motivated than individuals on their own.
While the potential learning benefits of group work are significant, simply assigning group work is no guarantee that these goals will be achieved. In fact, group works can and often do backfire badly when they are not designed, supervised, and assessed in a way that promotes meaningful teamwork and deep collaboration.
Group work can help students develop a host of skills that are increasingly important in the professional world (Caruso & Woolley, 2008; Mannix & Neale, 2005). Positive group experiences, moreover, have been shown to contribute to student learning, retention and overall college success (Astin, 1997; Tinto, 1998; National Survey of Student Engagement, 2006).
Properly coached and structured group projects can reinforce skills that are relevant to both group and individual work, including the ability to:
· Break complex tasks into parts and steps
· Plan and manage time
· Refine understanding through discussion and explanation
· Give and receive feedback on performance
· Challenge assumptions
· Develop stronger communication skills.
Group works can also help students develop skills specific to collaborative efforts, allowing students to...
· Tackle more complex problems than they could on their own.
· Delegate roles and responsibilities.
· Share diverse perspectives.
· Pool knowledge and skills.
· Hold one another (and be held) accountable.
· Receive social support and encouragement to take risks.
· Develop new approaches to resolving differences.
· Establish a shared identity with other group members.
· Find effective peers to emulate.
· Develop their own voice and perspectives in relation to peers.
Each of them is important. We cannot rate one as higher than the other. Individual assignments assist learners to individually develop academically to equip then to work individually with less or no supervision.
On the other hand, group projects and assignments help learners to develop team work spirit and cooperative skills to enable them cope with their other team players in the world of work after their academic training.
All instructors must endeavor to give both individualistic and group projects to better equip our students to holistically play significant roles in developing global societies.
I think individual assignments is the best when you need to test how each student understand the tasks but group assignments can help in developing team working ability
Individual assignment is related to a specific topic for the study for the students . In case of such assignment teacher generally select the topic of the subject which may help to the student not only for the guideline of study but also it may help them to development of ideas for the further study an the development .
In case of group assignment it involves specific group for their study of development & progress which remain common & beneficial to the entire groups as a hold .
For a senior projects design course, you will need groups. For freshman level classes, you need to help students develop the skills and knowledge through individual assignments. for those in between you may need both.
