I totally disagree! The success of a thesis or a dissertation for a graduate student relies upon the roles of their supervisor. The student not only needs to be equipped with the knowledge, but also be able to manage others and external factors at the same time. The journey during the period of conducting research is mixed with various tasks. Five supportive roles of a supervisor involving the supervision system are:

• specific technical support,
• broader intellectual support,
• administrative support,
• management, and
• personal support brings about the output of the study.

Remember, the supervisor’s roles take effect not only the successful of student thesis and dissertation, but also the whole development of the life of student.

I think the first author of one article should be considered as only author for academic uplift. The supervisors may be allotted separate credit.

In many cases, the co authors are actually 'ornamental' authors.😁

As far as I have done with my students I did participate and fortunately read more than they did and analyze and tell them , so they have clarity and courage to publish !!!

I think this method is the best there is. Many universities also consider teaching and community service with more emphasis on publications

It is possible to use scientific research to obtain a scientific title, while the doctoral thesis is preparing for a doctorate.

I think in addition to publication of articles and books, there need to be focus on practical applications of the research to some extent. This will help in not only having fundamental research, conceptual research to add to body of knowledge but also research for the immediate benefit of mankind.

I agree with all the above answers. Besides, this should not be the only criteria though. There are many other parameters which should be given weightage.

I understand your sentiments. The situation exists among lazy academics who 'steal' the lead authorship positions of researches primarily conducted by their students. Many lazy supervisors fail to carry out their supervisory roles diligently but expect to be part of published papers from such studies. However, this is not always the case though for many excellent and diligent supervisors. True scholars append their names to journal articles to be published if they actually participated in the unfolding of the research.

Depending on the institutions, publishing is one of many factors considered for promotion to the rank of professor in the USA. Depending on the institution, it include external grants received, journal publications, number of graduate students supervised, teaching effectiveness and professional service.

Supervising a thesis is as tedious as writing it so to me the supervisors become co - authors .

REgarding co-authros, I agree with Perpetual Ofori Abankwa. But, for promotion among the faulty ranks, it depends on the institution. Some institutions emphasize research activities as the dominant factor whereas others emphasize teaching and service. Promotion criteria is defined by each separate institution with respect to its mission and employee expectations.

Since I received my doctorate last year, I have been editing dissertations and I do not believe publishing should be a criteria. The dissertation is a published document as it is.

Agree with Dr Arben but why HIGH IMPACT JOURNALS only? Any publishing is worth the effort! All of us are aware of the time and efforts that go in publishing in high impact journals and I am not talking of the efforts of writing but I am talking about the process of publishing!

The adage, " publish or perish" has long dominated the academic circles . The truth is that professional development in a given discipline can not happen unless the knowledge of theories and practice in the form of conducting research or writing books are entwined. Generally speaking, this academic model is a call to action that underlies the reason for publishing . Although the model has been received unfavourably by some, its prophecy that professional growth is made possible through continually striving for learning and developing one’s intellectual powers for contributing to the wheel of knowledge is inevitably true.

Good day, I totally agree with you. I think everyone has the right to show off their personal strengths or weaknesses in publishing what they have taken the trouble to write. No doubt they need some guidance but sometimes the reputed faculty members normally take advantage of this situation and demand more than what is their share.
