I am synthesis the Al2O3 in planetary ball milling machine for reduction of particle size. After 3 batch of 9hr process for 25grams Al2O3 the time has been increased from 9hr to 12 hr. Why this is happening? is it related to jar temperature? i am taking 40 micron powder 25 grams weight for each batch.
Hi, yes - during bead milling the temperature should be kept as low as possible. If this does not help - I would try to select a different stabilizer.

1) "the time has been increased from 9hr to 12 hr", by who, are you following any reported paper?
2) DId you synthesie AL2O3 yourself ? or just milling the already synthesized (purchased) powder to reduce the particle size?
What size are you aiming to mill to? I am unclear as to what has actually increased milling time (9 to 12 hours). Are these 3 consecutive batches of alumina or different starting or processing conditions? In a ball mill virtually all the energy is converted into heat, light, and noise and very little into comminution. Take a look at:

I presume that you are dry milling alumina powder. The size of the pot and the size of the balls are important parameters for reproducible results. Also. see that the pots are clean after every experiments. Addition of a surface active agent may be required.
If you start with alumina you do not synthesize. As mentioned by Alan there are limits in size which can be achieved depending on material hardness. Wet milling with additives might be more beneficial to achieve a 'stable' colloidal dispersion of particles with small size.
How much size of alumina you need. If you need the particle size in nm then it will be difficult to obtain that size. Moreover, to obtain nm sized particles you should select the method other than dry milling that may be wet milling.
You could also try to change the mill to the Emax from Retsch. Usually, grinding times are greatly reduced compared to a PM. But the other here are right: Wet milling must be done to achieve particles smaller than 1-10 µm, depending on the sample properties.
