Hello RG community,
currently I am trying to reach these goals on silicon surfaces for a microfludic project. I have used silanes like APTES in the past in order to get my si-surface hydrophobic but since I deal with cells and biomolecules I think that these substances could be way to cytotoxic. Or at least it makes my silicon surface bioincompatible in general which is not optimal for biomedical cell processes.
Does somebody have an idea? Maybe I am not correct with avoiding silanes. Please correct me if so.
I have read about using CH4, CF4 or SF6 plasma. Has somebody used something like that in the past and can recommend it?

How about micellar structures, dense and stabilized, as the coated surface, the ingredients for micelles can be biocompatible at sources.

I tried in the past by RF-PECVD CF4 as well different alkyl-siloxanes (TEOS, HDMSO) as well CH4 or C2H2 in Ar-O2 atmosphere, for this purpose. I can tell you that by using low oxidative environment and/or low energy there is the possibility to tune the composition by promoting alkyl group on the top surface giving hydrophobicity. HMDSO more performing than TEOS and C2H2 better than CH4. Fluoro-based components are even more effective but more complex and costly to use with plasma technology. Anyway, typically togheter with hydrophobicity also olephobicity is increased. You can preserve satisfactory oleophilicity with no more than about 90° contact angle with water. You can find abundant literature on HMDSO and C2H2 in PECVD if this sohuld be useful for you.

I believe that silanes are fine. You can vary the substituents of the silyl group (for reactivity) and also the organic residue attached to it. For good hydrophobicity, I am suggesting some perfluorinated R. You can purchase the chemicals from ABCR, Germany, of Gelest in the US.
