I want to include some images from "Molecular Biology of THE CELL 6th edition" book into my PhD thesis. What should I mention in my thesis when I copy any image from this book, so it should not violate any copyright issue.
Do I need to take permission from authors and publishers for copying pictures?
Standard Harvard reference would be:
Illustrator's name (Date) Title. In: Author's name(s) (Date) Book title. Place of publication, Publisher, p.page number.
Best advice would be to check with your department/library for their advice, so as to comply with their specific regulations.

My field is plant taxonomy. In certain cases even Ph D thesis might be considered as equivalent to a publication. In such cases you are to take written permission from the publisher(s) for reproduction.

In my opinion, you cannot reproduce copyrighted images from a book in your own publication without permission, at least under copyright law as I know it in the United States. It is much different under the law from "fair use" that allows you to quote a sentence or two without permission (but with citation).
I encourage you to proceed VERY carefully when it comes to reproducing copyrighted images without written permission. In most cases the copyright will be held by the textbook publishing company, and they may not permit you to use their material.
As suggested by Michael, I think to need to take the permission by mentioning properly how and why you are going to reproduce the original content for your use.

Thanks for everyone. Actually some of the pictures like 3D-DNA, chromatin and complex protein molecule are difficult to draw. So, I thought to take from books or published articles. Now because all these are copyright materials, so I cannot use without permission. But I think, I can put those picture in my thesis which are under the creative common licence, without any permission, just with proper citation.
Ankit Agrawal - If it is completely clear that the photos or graphics were published under creative common, then it should be OK for you to use them. But something published as Open Access may NOT be the same thing as Creative Commons, so be very careful to confirm the legal status of the things you want to reproduce.
