I just to ask RG community which is appropriate: to use person like "I" or the third person like "You" in reporting research reports. Thanks all RG members.
Not quite sure what you mean by research reports, but if you must use either then I is better than you. Using 'you' indicates the writer has expectations from and of the reader, which can be annoying.
I have seen the use of the pronoun "I" in various research papers, however in scientific writing the pronoun "you" has no purpose. It is my personal position that, in a formal sense, the pronoun "I" should not be used in a technical expository essay of any type. But I will offer that the use of the pronoun "I" in scientific papers or reports is acceptable in many communities.
The use of "I" and " you" shouldn't be used in a research paper. However, you may use the passive construction instead. To avoid using , for example, ( I kbserved that.....), you may write (It has been obseved that ......).
In a thesis, you can use 'the researcher'. In a publication, you can use 'the researcher' or 'the author.' These are better and accepted by higher institutions and journals rather than using pronouns such as I and We.
There is no universal rule against the use of the first person in scientific writing. In fact, the academic community used first-person pronouns until the 1920s; afterwards third person and passive-voice constructions were adopted. However, the use of “I” and “we” still has some generally accepted rules; e.g., the first person is more likely used in the abstract, introduction, discussion, and conclusion sections of an academic paper while the third person and passive constructions are found in the methods and results sections. First-person pronouns in scientific writing are acceptable if used in a limited fashion and to enhance clarity.
Using of "I", "you" and "we" should be avoided but sometimes the word 'author' or 'researcher' can be used. However, the "Passive Voice" expression is more appropriate.
Don’t sweat the publication's style . . . write for clarity to the readership using your own style . . . . . an editor is there to help with the details of the publication's style.
It is basically looking the issue in different perspective and also depend upon the Journal requirement. However as discussed above, use of third person (author or researcher) is preferred. I just try to related with property right. I am not sure about the reality.
I think use of I show more authoritative (atleast for some part of paper) and therefore reduce the acceptance by all others atleast perceptionlly. It is more relevant as the random experiment has probabilistic result and each method used by experimenter has some error (systematic or random). By no means, it is exactly repeated by others. Using author instead relate somehow the essence of randomness about the author in more pragmatic manner. Though again it is a perception and reflecting the same issue either by 'I' or 'author'
Please let me know if this works or makes sense for you:
Know the audience your research report is directed to.
If their language is not you first language, write your report in your first language and then translate it using Google into the language of the audience. Then check-to-see if you are saying what you want to say.
darshakon ko jaanen ki aapakee shodh riport ko nirdeshit kiya gaya hai.
yadi unakee bhaasha aapakee pahalee bhaasha nahin hai, to apanee riport apanee pahalee bhaasha mein likhen aur phir googlai ka upayog karake darshakon kee bhaasha mein isaka anuvaad karen. phir jaanchen ki kya aap kah rahe hain ki aap kya kahana chaahate hain
Of course since you know the language of your audience, edit the Google translation to say what you want to say to them.
Comonly used words are author, researcher insread of using pronouns like "I" , "We". Most of journals editorscorrections include this kind of writing mistakes...
