Yes Patrick, thanks. But it's more than just 'talk'. My research is on my students, I interact with them. These few days, I have been invigilating. When I observe a student who behaves in a suspicious manner, I will stand very close to his table so that he knows that if he dares to copy, he will be caught straightaway. Such prevention is better than having to take serious and unpleasant action.

Thank you Sribas. Our posts must have 'crossed', I only saw Prof N's post earlier. I like this: 'contributions of social science have formed the foundation of human society and civilization and continuously expand our view of nature. Research is a dominant part of the accumulated wisdom of the human race and of human intellect. Based on these ideals, research forth this charter with the aim of promoting education'.

My opinion is that when governmental organizations actually read what we write and what we explain or predict, things may actually change for the better. Any researcher that loves what he does knows that when others read their work they will understand the impacts of a specific study. If authorities would take action according to what we tell in our papers I believe not only peace but economic environmental and political issues would be solved in a much better and peaceful way.

My own research contributes to improved my own undestanding of physics, good practice in research and teaching, publish good papers and bring in funding. All of these personal 'achivements' benefit my institution.

I believe that if we have more people dedicating themselves to the academic life, even if not all providing innovation but devoting himself to teaching, we will be contributing to the moral and ethical elevation of the general population. This will already be enough!

When research is done, the main objective is that the result is directed to the peace and welfare of the population, but in the hands of unscrupulous can turn into instruments that create discord and may be used unlawfully

Most of my research is on sociology of industrial relations law in India; lately I have gone into strategic HRM issues.

The politician-bureaucracy nexus in India is so strong that they would not listen to the academic research so as to do any correction to injustice. So honestly speaking it is just for the sake of academics or presenting it in ILO workshops or in seminars.

I had established in one of my major researches that lasting industrial peace can be possible if we employers stop labour's ruthless exploitation, but the state agencies have colluded with them to continue the status quo in their personal and political interests. Labour unrest at the covert level continues due to unfair labour practices committed due to the tacit unholy nexus,

Research is double-edged sword. There are research which is positive for humanity and others (military research, black pharmaceutical, etc) which are negative for humanity. Thus the answer it is not so easy and I am very skeptical.

Take for example the "Manhattan Project":

It is a joke that USA needed atomic bomb to win the war with Japan, after having won the war with Germany... So, research is not so innocent and not all researchers should be treated with socially respect... (The above project is my main objection against the "Einstein legend", sorry but I never accepted the fact that a physicist helped a government to build such a brutal mass weapon. This was a strong reason for me to totally abandon Physics at the 80's, since Reagan was preparing the "Star Wars" and positions for Physicists in USA were for "laser physics",,,)

If by "OUR" you mean the humans, my opinion is: Immense achievements have been made toward the prosperity of the communities; however, unfortunately, no improvement towards peace has been achieved. Ironically, we still have the same old problems that our ancestors had. We fight over borders and power. Overkill. The science has even flared it up by providing the tools. Sad but true. We can talk about this and that and show off our scientific achievements worldwide but we still make the same old mistakes.

If we want to understand the Universe, save the world, we must think what TESLA have said! It gives the direction for research which will fight poverty, enable peace and make globalization sustainable!

To be honest Miranda, our university is still in the proposal stage of conducting the ex-post evaluation of its research output based development programs introduced to the community.

Research in any field, if utilized correctly and in positive manner, will definitely contribute to peace and prosperity of community and country.

For instance, take the example of research related to nuclear physics. If used for positive sense, it is very much helpful in energy generation.

The most important thing is that how we are making use of that.
