Yes Patrick, thanks. But it's more than just 'talk'. My research is on my students, I interact with them. These few days, I have been invigilating. When I observe a student who behaves in a suspicious manner, I will stand very close to his table so that he knows that if he dares to copy, he will be caught straightaway. Such prevention is better than having to take serious and unpleasant action.
Thank you Sribas. Our posts must have 'crossed', I only saw Prof N's post earlier. I like this: 'contributions of social science have formed the foundation of human society and civilization and continuously expand our view of nature. Research is a dominant part of the accumulated wisdom of the human race and of human intellect. Based on these ideals, research forth this charter with the aim of promoting education'.
My opinion is that when governmental organizations actually read what we write and what we explain or predict, things may actually change for the better. Any researcher that loves what he does knows that when others read their work they will understand the impacts of a specific study. If authorities would take action according to what we tell in our papers I believe not only peace but economic environmental and political issues would be solved in a much better and peaceful way.
Yes Pedro, I agree: 'If authorities would take action according to what we tell in our papers I believe not only peace but economic environmental and political issues would be solved in a much better and peaceful way.'
My own research contributes to improved my own undestanding of physics, good practice in research and teaching, publish good papers and bring in funding. All of these personal 'achivements' benefit my institution.
I believe that if we have more people dedicating themselves to the academic life, even if not all providing innovation but devoting himself to teaching, we will be contributing to the moral and ethical elevation of the general population. This will already be enough!
A major advance in the research in the area of health was in "reprogramming" cells. With this achievement, the scientists were able to transform skin cells or blood in so-called "pluripotent" - that have the potential to become any other kind of cell in the body, thus creating prospects for curing diseases
When research is done, the main objective is that the result is directed to the peace and welfare of the population, but in the hands of unscrupulous can turn into instruments that create discord and may be used unlawfully
Most of my research is on sociology of industrial relations law in India; lately I have gone into strategic HRM issues.
The politician-bureaucracy nexus in India is so strong that they would not listen to the academic research so as to do any correction to injustice. So honestly speaking it is just for the sake of academics or presenting it in ILO workshops or in seminars.
I had established in one of my major researches that lasting industrial peace can be possible if we employers stop labour's ruthless exploitation, but the state agencies have colluded with them to continue the status quo in their personal and political interests. Labour unrest at the covert level continues due to unfair labour practices committed due to the tacit unholy nexus,
Research is double-edged sword. There are research which is positive for humanity and others (military research, black pharmaceutical, etc) which are negative for humanity. Thus the answer it is not so easy and I am very skeptical.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manhattan_Project and ask yourselves: what was its contribute to peace? Is there anybody who believes that Japan could had won USA? It is a joke that USA needed atomic bomb to win the war with Japan, after having won the war with Germany... So, research is not so innocent and not all researchers should be treated with socially respect... (The above project is my main objection against the "Einstein legend", sorry but I never accepted the fact that a physicist helped a government to build such a brutal mass weapon. This was a strong reason for me to totally abandon Physics at the 80's, since Reagan was preparing the "Star Wars" and positions for Physicists in USA were for "laser physics",,,)
If by "OUR" you mean the humans, my opinion is: Immense achievements have been made toward the prosperity of the communities; however, unfortunately, no improvement towards peace has been achieved. Ironically, we still have the same old problems that our ancestors had. We fight over borders and power. Overkill. The science has even flared it up by providing the tools. Sad but true. We can talk about this and that and show off our scientific achievements worldwide but we still make the same old mistakes.
If we want to understand the Universe, save the world, we must think what TESLA have said! It gives the direction for research which will fight poverty, enable peace and make globalization sustainable!
To be honest Miranda, our university is still in the proposal stage of conducting the ex-post evaluation of its research output based development programs introduced to the community.
YES, Our Research Projects in one way or another promotes peace / prosperity to our communities / our countries later to the whole world...
I am on the Organizational Management research side... i see there is always for economic gains; strategise and implemented for the betterment of the INTERNAL and MARKET SOCIETIES.
Internal - Within and linked to our Organization.
Market - Our Customers includes BUYER - SELLER - CONSUMER
Dear All, Lijo Francis, Patrick Low and others that you know are not able any longer to log in their RG account from yesterday. RG suspended their accounts without any reason. I don't know why, but I find this an outstanding abuse. Please help them and inform all other participants as this is a signal that things are not going in the right way in RG before it happens to you!
Dear friends, for the sake of peace and harmony, let's give RG some time. Let RG settle the matter about loss of Prof Ljubomir's thread on Internet that I only saw and responded on, last night. Just a few hours ago...
My own thread has been taken over by RG, and it cannot be viewed by many people, except the 18 (including Pardis, Martin, Amritlal, Mahfuz, Noureddine, Prof N).
Friends, sometimes Blessings come in disguise. Now Lijo has more time to work on his research without RG cares or commitments. Lijo wrote this 5 hours ago to us all:
'Just now I have received the Cyprus Visa in my Passport.
Now I am going to prepare the PPT slides to present my papers in Cyprus EDS Conference. Since I have two papers to present.
Congratulations to our friend Lijo! It is bad if he could not have a chance to share his papers with RG community members! Thank You Miranda for this information.
