In the history of German when did the concept of the "state" (staat) appear in normal usage?
I am asking this because I wish to see given that the concept of the state meaning the given political form/entity emerges following Machiavelli's coning the term and spread as his ideas about politics spread in the 16th-17th Century, when did it first appear and was used in German.
What is interesting is that Kaiser and Reich are clearly Roman in their origins and but to my general level knowledge of German there are no similar Germanic terms for such things (king or emperor) and (empire, kingdom or realm) that existed prior those terms being introduced by contact with the Roman Empire.
So I am interested about 'staat' (state) to see the historical frame and what kind of authors embraced this term apparently from Machiavelli.
