In the absence of Mass Spec or HPLC equipment, is there a reliable method to detect purine levels in cell lysates?

I am interested in testing the whole-cell production of purines in an embryonic cell line. However HPLC and Mass Spec are not available options. Is there a reliable method to detect and, if possible, quantify purine levels in this instance? It's a long shot but any thoughts are appreciated.

For qualitative detection of purines, it is possible to use thin layer chromatography (TLC). Use either Sliver nitrate-bromophenol blue (Wood reagent) or Sliver nitrate-sodium dichromate as spraying agents.
