The first thing you have to do is to know which is the molecule you want to determine. There is no any general methodology, it depends on the analyte. Is it electroactive? Maybe you don't need any modification, just a good conditioning. Even in case it is you may want to increase the sensitivity and you can nanostructure the electrode or pre-concentrate the analyte by adsorption.
In case it is not electroactive or what you need is selectivity you may modify with recognition elements such as antibodies for developing immunosensors.
It depends on the analyte and the objective of the modification, in case this is needed.
