This is a rather general question; the details of which has been a matter of perplexity for many. If two authors contribute to a publication equally, and one of them is the primary author can the other person too be considered first author? Will it be right for the contributing author to mention this publication in the list of his first author papers?

You are right about using asterisk and following the order of authors in the same way as being originally published. I support and also ask others to follow that, as changing the order of authors is illegal according to publishing and ethical policies. But what I do not understand is while applying for a job when the recruiters ask for 'number of papers as primary/first authors' and if the applicant has say 5 first author papers and 3 papers in which he is an equally contributing author with a different first author shall he write '5' or '8' in the above clause?

so is it appropriate to type 5 or 8?
