The water and energy consumption are related and increasing of electric vehicles can increase indirect water consumption and withdrawal in the power plants.

The analysis of replacing the EU’s 250 million fossil-fuel-fired cars with electric cars show that it would require a 31-65% increase in electricity generation. This will results an increase of water withdrawal 70063-216992 MCM/year in power plants by once-through system and 619-8754 MCM/year by recirculating system. The water consumption that will evaporate in the power plants will be between 310 and 3605 MCM depends on the type of power plants and the cooling system.

For a sample in Middle East, the analysis of replacing the Oman’s 1.08 million fossil-fuel-fired cars with electric cars in 2030 show that, it would require a 16-33% increase in electricity generation. The water withdrawal will be between 3 and 364 MCM and water consumption between 2 and 6 MCM.

The calculations show that changing all of fossil-fuel-fired cars with electric cars will cause more pressure on water resources and especially in Middle East that confronted with water crisis and water desalination plants are using for producing water might not be possible.

If the negative impacts of EVs on water resource and environment is in contrast with the main goal of using electric cars to save the environment by reduce of the greenhouse gasses emission?
