If I understand your question right and you're afraid of convergence problems: Just do a "symmetric" contact dafiniton and you don't have to think about mesh size on contact or target side (only disadvantage of "symmetric" is that you can't check contact forces).

I assumed you're operating with contacts, so you have a "contact" and a "target" side?!
