When identifying the genera of Oxyopidae, there are some well defined (or so I think) characters that any worker can learn after the usage of the key. I would like to discuss those characters and reconcile my own experiences. So here goes: If there are no teeth on any of the margins of the chelicerae then it is genus Peucetia (there are other characters but this one is the most definitive since all other genera have teeth on the retromargin). Genus Oxyopes: retromargin of chelicerae with teeth (not specific for oxyopes though), anterior median eyes more than their diameter apart, almost equal distance between posterior median eyes, legs IV longer than legs III, clypeus and femora are with dark bands. Please comment if these characters are deemed enough to identify an oxyopid to the genus Oxyopes. Do you guys use any other character(s) for a confirm ID? Any criticisms? Suggestions? Genera Tapponia, Hamataliwa and Hamadruas have the anterior median eyes less than their diameter apart. Tapponia has the posterior eye row straight while hamataliwa and hamadruas as well as oxyopes and peucetia have it procurved. Tapponia also has irridiscent setae on its abdomen while no other genus has it. Hamadruas has a 'saddle' on its carapace while no other genus does. Anterior median eyes less than their diameter apart, posterior eye row procurved and the absence of the 'saddle' gives genus Hamataliwa. Abdomen with geometric color pattern in hamadruas but not in Hamataliwa. There are some genitalic characters as well. There are other genera: Hostus, which is rare and consisting of a single species reported by Simon. Genus Pseudohostus, also consisting of a single species. Genus Schaenicoscelis, consisting of seven species and genus Tapinillus, consisting of three species. What about these rare genera? I am looking for valuable inputs and importantly pictures of characters, especially the saddle of Hamadruas, from other experienced workers. Please help. Thanks.
