As you know elemental analysis of water in general and particularly in drinking water is of special consideration to living organisms including humans in that the presence or absence of some elements affect the physiological activities and may reflect very serious conditions. To have a rapid, simple and low cost methods either by HPLC or simple spectrophotometric methods play an important role to have safe water for human consumption.
In my opinion IC is the best technique and also reliable specially designed for water analysis.
HPLC can be used to determine anions and cations but you need many chemicals and sample preparation and specific column. But Ion chromatography with two channels equipped with cation and anion columns with suppressor column and using high sensitivity conductivity detector is the best method with reasonable cost.
