i have tried modified hummer's method for the synthesis of graphene oxide by adding Graphite powder and NaNO3 in H2SO4 . In this mix KMnO4 was added and diluted with water . this mix was heated for 10-15 mins at 95 °C and kept for stirring overnight then H2O2 was added and washed with HCL and water.
so the product was shiney white in color the uv absorptionn is at 240nm . am i getting the right results?
I don't think they are graphene oxides which should be black or dark grey colour.
Graphene oxide is one of the most important factors in controlling the ambient temperature during synthesis. Most likely, this factor is out of your control and a lot of graphite powder and other raw materials are left in the environment. I suggest you compare your reaction with this article once (DOI: 10.1016/j.synthmet.2020.116543). Your solution should first be hydrated with sludge green hydrogen peroxide and then dark brown.
Actual colour of graphene oxide is brown. Check whether you have used required quantity of concentrated sulphuric acid and potassium permanganate. No need to dilute the reaction mixture. Reaction has to be carried out in concentrated condition. The colour of graphene oxide is dark brown. You should be change the reaction condition. It does not enough using KMno4 amount because of reaction colour.
