From literature I could see that I need a mixture of solvents to make solution of Polypropylene, But none of these solvents dissolve polypropylene at room temperature. How do I select a solvent and carry out this measurement at elevated temperatures?
Milind Suryawanshi Perhaps decalin at boiling temperature will suit you to dissolve polypropylene. But how will you explore it? It is necessary that decalin does not interfere with the measurement. But it has exactly the same groupings of atoms. Which atoms will exhibit nuclear magnetic resonance?
Dissolving PP, especially high MW PP at room temperature in meaningful concentrations for NMR is nearly impossible. Typically, high boiling chlorinated solvents such as deuterated dichlorobenzene are used to dissolve such polymers at very high temperatures, such as 150C. Even then, it may take hours to days to get your polymer dissolved, depending on its MW and tacticity. NMR spectroscopy on these polymers is usually performed at temperatures in excess of 100C.
