SPSS has a syntax for that as I recall. There is no way of doing it by menu options.

So it seems you are obliged to use some syntax.

To run a factor analysis on tetrachoric correlations, you need to:

Calculate the tetrachoric correlations. Lorenzo-Seva and Ferrando (2012) have an article that includes SPSS macros as an online supplement for computing a tetrachoric correlation matrix.

Run a factor analysis using the correlation matrix from step 1. If you're not familiar with how to import a correlation matrix to use with SPSS factor analysis, check this out Z. Zhang's example.

There is also an IBM Technote with the title, "Exploratory Factor Analysis with categorical variables" (see IBM link below). But it appears to perform PCA only, not true factor analysis.

To the good answers you've already received, let me add that John Ubersax has a page I've found useful. He describes tetrachoric correlations and has a bunch of links, including to a different SPSS macro. I've used his TetMat software to calculate tetrachoric matrices from phi matrices and then submitted those to EFA using SPSS.

ViSta "The Visual Statistics System" provides tetrachoric correlations options (including factor analysis of tetrachoric correlations matrix). Please, find attached a paper describing the software.

I recommend function fa() from psych library in R environment. R is completely free language for statistical computing. You can install R from http://www.r-project.org

There is an R module that you can add to SPSS than will appear in the pull-down menus called R-Factor (I I think the current version is 2.4). It is written by the people that Bruce Weaver refers to (Lorenzo-Seva and Ferrando ) and is better than the standard SPSS offerings. It has two methods of calculating polychorics or tetrachorics and is robust (you can often get computational problems with tetrachorics). It also has the most up-to-date number of factors routines and some nice little post-hoc routines for looking at scales derived from an EFA.

I downloaded R. Tryed to get Essential extentions from IBM to run R, and not succedded. Already 6 hours into it and nothing.

You suggesting I create a data file. In Excell? What king of file will work? I have only 28 items that are dichotomous. It should be straigh forward but .... .

Per your suggestion above, where do I include the saved datat file? I am not very familiar with writing my own syntax and programing, and that is why I am asking these questions.

If you are running under Windows, you don't need to do anything except to install R. And R will read an excel file. If you'd like,you can send me the excel file so I can examine it. Of course, please make sure the file is completely anonymous with all ID and variable names deleted.

I am working on running EFA for dichotomous data for 2000 observations. I read your previous comment in the on-going discussion (which was really helpful).

I am curios that whether using "ml" in "fa" is a good way while dealing with dichotomous data. I am a new learner of IRT and EFA, just want to make sure that I understand its application in a refined way.
