For example if I use a throttling valve in order to cool a gas by using the joule thomson effect, how can I adjust the valve so that the gas reduces its pressure to a desired value?

For example if the gas is flowing through a pipe which has a diameter of 20 mm, when the gas has a pressure of 300 bar before the valve, what is the difference when I want to reduce its pressure to 50 bar or 10 bar? I guess what matters is the reduction of the cross section area of the pipe but how can i make the necessary calculations for this?
