You are mixing a few things, in Abaqus you have constraints such as tie and interactions such as contact. Also dependent/independent the terminology in Abaqus is Master and Slave.

But to answer your question, generally the more rigid, flatter and coarser (mesh) should be the master, as ideally the slave needs to conform to the master and its easier that way.
