We are using a mixture of HAuCl4 and Na3citrate (mixed at room temperature) to carry out Turkevich method for AuNp synthesis but we are not getting result. What can we do?
This method works at boiling temperature only. If you do it at lower temperatures the nucleation is not fast enough and you get a very broad size distribution. The key to this method is that nucleation occurs fast practically exhausting the supply of gold ions. There is still debate as to what happens right after the first few seconds of the reaction. You need to boil the AuCl4- solution and then add 1% sodium citrate. Then keep boiling for 20 minutes. The solution goes from yellow to colorless, then to pale grey, turns pale purple and slowly turn into a ruby red color over 10-15 minutes.
If you revert the order of the mixing you get smaller particles (boil de citrate then add the AuCl4H to it.
