Hi, I need to store some larvae of G. mellonella for future RNA extractions.
My idea is to pre freeze them with liquid nitrogen and then put them in a eppendorf at -80.
Should I add also trireagent to the eppendorf? Should I store the whole insects or grind them first and then put them in -80 under trizol reagent?

For RNA extraction, it is recommended to freeze samples in liquid nitrogen and store them at -80 °C until the analysis.
If you are going to extract the RNA from the whole insect, freeze it whole. If it's from any specific part, it's better to freeze just the excised part separately. Only add the trireagent when you'll extract the RNA.
You can also freeze the samples directly in the microtubes. Just remember to make a small hole in the lid. It is better to use cryotubes for this purpose.

I think your plan is a good one. Flashing freezing in liquid N and storing at -80C is a safe bet for most omics work.
