How to stop dimerisation of aromatic thiols in the following case?

I'm synthesizing 2,5 dimercaptoterephthalic acid. In the basic hydrolysis step( degassed KOH in EtOH/H2O), I think there is dimerization of aromatic thiols leading to impurities. What should I do?
