I am currently preparing metal thin film on NaCl substrate by Thermal Evaporation Technique. There is some difficulties on Cu film so now I am planning to work with graphene substrate. I have a piece of HOPG. Can you please give me idea how to separate single layer of graphite?
Once I read that the first sample of graphene has been obtained using plastic tape. I am not sure that this techinique will work with graphite, but nothing is lost with trying...

Hello,
To synthesize the graphene from HOPG the scotch tape method is effective. Although, you may use chemical route also to exfoliate the graphene layers.
Also, a restoration of some "HOPG thin layers" is possible using a solvent[1,2] for the scotch tape (only).
Notes: [1] Do not treat the solvents in a closed room.
[2] A typical list of solvents : Dichloromethane, Chloroform (trichloromethane), white spirit, alcohol, acetone, Dichloromethane etc.
You will not get a single layer of graphene to use as substrate by using HOPG.
Thanks all. I tried with chloroform but it did not dissolve completely.
