In our lab we are working on different bacterial communities. Accidentally we have found a bacteria (as contamination) which showing positive activity on some plate assay (secondary metabolites). Now my query is how to report this bacteria, as contamination or just simply saying its from unknown source or needs to identify its source ?....Need experts opinions and it will be helpful if anyone can provide any reference article.

In this case,you must describe the coonditions completely. It was a contaminant microbe during survey on microbial communities and was a contaminant microbe.As it showed positive action ,it was isolated.

You can report them as contaminant if you do not have concrete information regarding source. But additionally you can add probable source by this way. I think you must preserve the bacterial isolate/contaminant first, so that you can reproduce whenever you need. Then, you can isolate DNA and complete DNA sequence for phylogenetic analysis. By this way you can get the bacterial origin/identity and relationship to other bacteria . By doing so, you can have ideas of closly related bacterial habitat to know your desired bacterial probable source. It is important to describe at least possible source when you publish any data.
