I am working on a biogeochemical cycling model for forest ecosystems. In these ecosystems, organic matter in the litter layer or mineral soil is most important for the nutrient cycles. Many models simplify the biological cycling and only consider organic matter in the litter layer. I am developing a code to simulate organic matter dynamics in the mineral soil profile.

Decomposition is rather simple however if my carbon pools in the soil only decompose and never receive carbon input C pools in the soil will decrease over time. I am looking for a simple way (not requiring too many parameters...) but effective/mechanistic way to simulate the transfer of organic matter from the litter layer down into the mineral soil profile and between mineral soil layers. Can anyone suggest any pathways I might explore?

Thanks!
