I need to model fluid flow passing through the multiple slits on a plate or screen. The screen has horizontal linear slits (as shown in image) instead of holes or woven wire.
I want to model gravity induced fluid flow passing through these multiple slits plate. My initial guess was to use Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH). However, the lack of importing complex geometry (as required in the present case) into SPH became a big problem.
CFD is the other promising option. I have seen flow simulation throw single slit, channel, holes but not sure for multiple slits. How good and fast is CFD for such problem.
Help me in getting progressed in solving the problem.
CFD openfoam is a free and nice tool for this problem. You can use Gmsh to create the geometry you need and then import it into openfoam.
@VikashPandey, I work with OpenFOAM. I have also used GMSH and other meshers. However, now a days I am working with solidworks to make cad file then mesh it by Pointwise. So, those things are not the issue.
The primary issue is that there are number of fine slits of width 500 micron (as shown in image). The number of slits can be really high, and we have to model the flow through the plate. It is something like in porous bed we have number of passing channel but modelling them on as it is basis is computationally expensive. So, we use porosity factors (Darcy's law) to model bed resistance and flow through it.
So, there may be computationally expensive direct way to model flow through original cad geometry. But the issue is that slits of 500 micron can make meshes really small making the simulation computationally expensive. Another, option is to model flow through a plate that represent the original geometry by means of porosity or something like that. Not sure on how to proceed.
Why not implement it in GPU? GPU computing is meant for such tasks if you do not want to compromise on the resolution.
And another option as you said do not use any CFD tool but rather fluid-flow models for porous structures, but then you may not be able to obtain the ready-made varieties of visual displays that you get from a CFD tool.
