We use a 0.5 mg/kg meloxicam for treating post surgery pain but this drug has been back ordered for months now. We have secured Meloxicam in powder form from Sigma (Catalog ID - PHR 1799). However, it is nearly insoluble in water/saline. So, I dissolved the required amount (5 mg) in DMSO (1 ml). Then brought up the solution to 10 ml using sterile saline or dd H2O, to make 0.5 mg/ml solution. As soon as the Meloxicam-DMSO solution is added to saline/ddH2O they precipitate no matter how long you vortex it.
It would be great if anyone could suggest a way out of this issue.
I have the same question. I found on website saying that meloxicam is insoluble in water, slightly soluble in acetone, soluble in dimethylformamide, very slightly soluble in ethanol (96 %) and in methanol. However, I think dimethylformamide is toxic to mouse and may not be a good solvent for this kind of studies...
was anyone able to solve this issue? I am trying to dilute meloxicam to obtain 6mg/ml but it does not dissolve in saline nor water
Not sure if anyone still need this but I found a way of dissolving powder meloxicam according to a manufacturer. I injected my mice (5mg/ml) and they had no adverse effect, but if the PH was adjusted with sodium hydroxide and hydrochloric acid they showed symptoms of toxicity.
