Dear all.
Do you know something on the journal papers or other publications treating on the issue predicting or assessing the existence of soil units (e.g. types, orders or suborders, reference groups) in delimitations used on elder soil maps, which were prepared on the base of older versions of soil classification systems?
I know that actually the unique highly confident resolution of this problem is to make a soil survey again. However it is difficult to do it again at large scale in any country... so we try to prepare a kind of correlation of old map legend with new version of soil classification and than verify it....

Dear Michał Stępień I think that recent science applications and technologies such as remote sensing, proximal soil sensing and GIS can be very helpful to reinterpret older soil maps. Andisol order for example, was formally adopted as the 11th soil order in 1990 and extensively studied from that date (https://www.sciencedirect.com/search?qs=andisol&show=25&sortBy=relevance); It is feasible to make an equivalence with the legends between older and actual soil maps, however, it is *not too easy to do it and field work is needed.
Soils are in constant development, the human activity could influence the soil formation process, my teacher Neal B. Stolpe said, in the future we will have another soil order "Antroposoils".
The new technology allow us to obtain data of the soil properties accurately and faster, it also could help us to discover new soil properties and include it in a classification system. It is needed therefore, to develop methods and practices that allow us compare and re-analyze the data in the future.

If you mention an order of "Antroposoils" it exists in some classifications, e. g. in WRB (reference groups Anthrosols and Technosols), and in Systematics of Polish Soils at least since 1974 (in current version from 2011 it is an order Anthropogenic soils divided into types Culturozems, Industrizems, Urbanozems, and also Salt affected soil, because in Poland naturally saline soils, as in other climatic zones, were not found ). I met a guy from IBGE (Braziliam agency which deal with natural resources) and he said they were actually doing it. They improve the braziliam soil maps using the data collected during 70-80's. And update the classification (braziliam soil taxonomy changed a lot).
But the methodology used in this procedure was not revealed to the public. I will try to reach someone and ask if they can share the methodology.
Indeed, making the survey again is out question.
