By far I know, some strains of Geobacter and Cyanobacterium, Shewanella oneidensis? These strain all relies on pilA gene for DIET. But it seems to me that the pilA gene is not that conserved among these species.

Is there a genetic method to predict a strain's capacity to do DIET? And what could be the experimental approach to confirm the DIET ability of a strain or a group of strains in a consortium.

Any suggestions are welcome.
