This is an important query for those who work on experimental or theoretical research.. They work on some problem for many years, but at the end - no results and no progress, and they feel like the research has been a failure and they have wasted many years. For some PhD students, their guide may give a very tough open problem or give some conjecture to test with data or experiments. The students work for many years, and probably try the same thing over and over again hoping that they get some luck or big break. This big break does not come, and the Guide may suggest them to work on some other research problem. These are some examples, and there are some real-life stories also. I am sure friends here know real-life instances too. Question is - what will be your advice to such scientists? How can they handle failure in research? Your advice is welcome!
