I need to check the deformation of nodes on mating surfaces. The problem is that I need the 2 nodes to be on the same y coordinate and only vary in z (it is a 3d problem) and I have managed to get them on the same x. I thought to create a reference point that is at the same position on both bodies and project this point onto the bodies themselves which makes sure they are on the same y. However, how do I make sure that when the model runs, these 'artificial' nodes get field output solutions?

I am assuming you are using Abaqus or something similar. In Abaqus you can use *Equation to constrain two nodes to move together in x , y and z individually.
There are other ways in Abaqus to do what you explained.

I guess there is a function to place node manually by defining the coordinates in Abaqus.
