I am running a 2 step loading analysis on a quasi-static model in abaqus standard 6.14. The first step is an instantaneous load and the other is a time variant load. The instant load applies fine and I get outputs but when it comes to running the other half, the simulation gets to the last allowable time increment and aborts. This is strange to me because less dense (i.e. fewer elements) versions of the current model have run fine. The elements are tetrahedrons. I would appreciate any insight on this.

you might have deformed elements when you refined the mesh. Try to make the mesh smoother and reduce the time increment

It would be easier to solve if you could tell the error message it throws up while aborting.
Hi Kais, wouldn't this be picked up when I verify the mesh? I don't have any errors when I do this. How do I find out if the elements are indeed deformed? Why would the first loading step run if the elements are deformed? Thanks for your help
What do you mean by "last allowable increment"? The preset maximum number of increments has been reached? If so, just increase that number in the step definition.

Not necessarily. If the required increment is smaller than 100th of your step size, but still reasonably large, you need more increments. Try setting number of increments to a large number and see what happens.
Of course, if the time increment is very small, you need to address whatever the problem with convergence is.
In the data file it gives some warning including whether elements are deformed or not. It may be that initially elements are not that deformed but after the first increment are excessively deformed
