I am trying to find out the the properties of bulk graded composites, along the thickness. Should I have to cut off the the sample and follow the hardness tests and characterization techniques? Is there any other process to find out properties along the varying thickness?
Ultrasonic characterisation? Dynamic elastic modulus can be measured by ultrasonic method.
I am not much aware of bulk graded composites. But I think you should cut your sample and perform hardness tests along the thickness direction. You can also crarry out some mechanical property tests such as tensile and fracture toughness tests on specimens in differnent position of cross section.

Cutting small slices of your graded structure is definitely one way to find the properties of each layer in your graded composite. There is also a method which we discussed in one of our papers that allows you to find the effective properties in different layers without any necessity for slicing your material. The approach is based on an inverse calculation of elastic modulus at different locations, from the results of two independent simple mechanical testings: tension and four-point bending tests.
