I have some sediment samples from a wetland that I want to analyze for its heavy metal contents using ICP-OES.

I intend to perform a partial digestion using microwave assisted digestion method based on the EPA 3051A.

However, I do not find any information regarding the size of sieve I should use. I had already oven-dried (40'c) the samples, crushed on a agate mortar, and sieved through a 2 mm ISO-complied sieve.

So my question are:

Q1: How should we decide what smaller size of sieve should we used (i.e.: 63 um)? How does it vary with our objective?

Q2: When there are differences between the EPA guideline and the machine manufacturer's application notes for the digestion temperature and duration, which one should we follow?

Thanks.
