Depending on several things, such as miniaturization required in application, the gain and efficiency that need to achieve, the radiation pattern... It is the choice as an antenna designer. At least it should be bigger than your radiator, so that it can simulate with different options and make a decision depending on application requirements.

1. The DGS length initially started with Lambda g by 4 near port to feed of the patch.

2. Then for miniaturized antenna the width of antenna also reduce symmetrical to both side.

3. A notch rectangular/ circular can also be attached near feed of patch.

Dear @shilpa, pls share more about your application. If it is just miniaturization, don't make notches bigger than the radiator. But if it is for gain enhancement, you can parameterize everything to achieve your goal. I agree with the opinion of @Atul Varshney.

1. Initially the DGS should be greater than Lambda g/4.

2. You can use optimization technique or by trying different geometries in simulation software
