You can use a MATLAB structure array: "A structure array is a data type that groups related data using data containers called fields. Each field can contain any type of data."

The days of big data are here. Big data may be structured or unstructured. Statistical data are essentially numerical for analytical purposes. Nonnumerical data should be converted into numerical form. There is no hard and fast approach to this.
