It depends on your specific goals- what you are intending to do next. Removing the oxides is different than removing the organics-
For instance you can acid-clean with scrubbing to remove the top layer(s) of oxides, and then handle the object with your fingers and therefore add organics.
An acid wash with mechanical action will remove the top layers- even weak mineral acids. But then depending on what you are trying to accomplish you may need a protocol for a wash/scrub/dry/coat to prevent contamination.
For some applications even abrasive paper, as suggested above, would work as long as you can ensure the material that was removed is no longer present on the surface.
