We use a service called "Safe Assignment", which comes with the Blackboard 9.1 learning management system. The advantage of using "Safe Assignment" is that it also checks all submissions against all other papers sent by students in all courses. Usually, web-based plagiarism-check systems only check for portions of text copied from the web, but this one also lets you know if a student is copying content from his or her peers. The limitation is that you have to be using Blackboard as your institutional LMS.

I often need to check papers for plagarism as I teach Academic writing. I have used turnitin although I did find the software often gave comparisons between work handed in by other students and even by the same student. This tended to give very high percentages of plagarised work when possibly it wasn't. I am sure that much of the other software will produce similar results.

I have found that most students dont plagarise but when they do it is poorly done with many obvious flaws in cohesion and grammar. Often the easiest way of spoting a copied section of writing is the change in style. I have found essays in which the font changes for a paragraph or the method of citation changes. A sudden change in the level of prose or the complexity of the vocabulary used is usually a good indication of plagarism. It is a huge problem as there are many sources of plagarised essays available on the internet. I did have one student who put in his list of references www.writemyessay.com which was a bit of a giveaway.

Difficult question, more difficult answer! Our own phd students can be convinced about the effects of finding out plagiarism ! But again, "easy way out" is today's MANTRA. Change in writing style, usage of words, sudden visibility of very good matter, may prove to be indicators!

We had a service at the University of Amsterdam, called euphoria. They had outsourced it to a company. Their service was not good because it regarded also quotes as plagiarism.

Are dissertations written by international students in the U.S. and industrial nations being plagiarized by professors in American, Canadian and English Universities?

Our journal (Journal of Mountain Science) will first check the plagiarism of a manuscript by using ITHENTICATE after it is submitted. This crosschecking system will compare the similarity of the present paper with the millions of papers previously published and articles in the internet (usually by google), and provide a separate similarity index with one single paper and the total similarity index.

The checked result is displayed in two columns, the left column is the checked paper, the system use different colors to mark the similar contents, and right column is the list of the possibly plagiarized papers, which are listed in the order of similaritity index percentage.

The marked color in the checked paper is corresponding to the color of the possible plagiarized paper.

We usually set a similarity index for rejecting a paper. When the total similarity index is up to 40%, or the similarity index with one single paper reaches 20%, the manuscript will be directly rejected.

When the similarity has not reached the set level but is relatively high, we will read the whole paper and check which part is taken from othe papers. If the abstract or conclusion is almost the same with one single paper, we'll definitely reject it too. If most figures and tables are the same with one single paper or the key data are copied from one paper, we'll reject the paper too.

If only the introduction part or discussion part is taken from other papers, we'll require the authors to revise the paper, and suggest them organize these two parts in their own way and write them in their own words.

We start to use the iThenticate software from 2010. At first, we found that a relatively high proportion of papers plagiarized some paragraphs from other papers, and some even copied a large part of contents from others papers. Now high plagiarism rate can be rarely seen for this year's new submission.

Interestingly enough Dunlian Qiu I would reject papers with intros and conclusions that show traces of plagiarism no matter what.

I have recently used the software Turnitin, I found it to be pretty good, except for the fact that in my domain area, legal studies, we do require a lot of citations for case comments. Turnitin has a few issues on that count, otherwise it is a pretty decent detector of plagiarism

Raoof: Thanks. Papers not on the Web, last year's student term papers, and term papers from friends at other universities are not scanned. Like all plagiarism checkers, there is no built-in intelligence to reliably flag the subtle difference (to software) between a quote or paraphrase or idea that has been reproduced with the source being correctly cited, and missing or incorrect referencing.

Mark put his finger on a key part of teaching students to write original essays and research reports. Elaborating on this, it is possible to set up situations where a student must do his own research. Years ago I settled on the formula of asking for only one paper at the end of the semester. Along the way I review the students' data, on note cards or digital supports, as well as their schematic outlines, making suggestions for improvement. Rigorous documentation in footnotes and a reference list are required for a passing grade.

These sources are used so frequently that they often come up near the top of the results of a Google search. Some of the plagiarism checkers don't detect them.

Regarding Ian's mention of last year's papers, I insist on printed and digital versions and keep a file of the latter; this file can also be searched electronically. If two or more professors teach the same course, then a bit of collaboration is called for.

Getting students who are used to passing courses by plagiarizing to have the experience of writing an original paper can make a big difference in their lives, raising their self-esteem and in some cases setting them on a more honest path for the rest of their educational and professional lives. I have gotten feedback from graduates, years after taking my courses, that testifies to this.

That's an interesting and well-reasoned article, José. Thanks for sharing it here. It's from 2007. Six years later it looks to me like we haven't made any progress in dealing with faculty plagiarism. I have spoken out on specific cases, only to find that some colleagues find whistle-blowing to be a worse crime than plagiarism, while others turn a blind eye to the problem to avoid making waves. When an institution has a double standard and students receive tougher penalties than professors for plagiarism, there is a grave ethical problem that needs to be addressed.

Yikes Ian. It is sad and outrageous that things like that should happen in a serious academic context.

Are we to blame? I believe that we lecturers should now set the example by templating and reserving the bottom left corner of each PowerPoint slide to include the author and date of our source. For chalk-and-talk, a verbal reference should suffice.

You're right, Ian. A PowerPoint format is no excuse for plagiarism, including images, which are just as much intellectual property as words. I like putting a subtle vertical strip on one side of the image, with the author's last name and year. Quotes should have the source under them, of course. In the end I flash the bibliography at the audience, more for the purpose of showing due respect for intellectual property than anything else. It is essential that we set a good example.

To check plagiarism effectively you need two approaches: (1) Web based (Google does make the difference), and (2) a deep insight into the body of knowledge of the text under consideration plus the most cited literature. Caveats: approach (1) does not work well in such cases as paraphrased texts; approach (2) consumes a lot of your resources relating time and cognition.

So, my answer to the question stated in your last paragraph is 'no'.

When I was teaching undergrads, when they copied and pasted usually two things would stick out; the flow of the information they would be giving and also the formatting will change. However, now there are a number of software you can use for that. I guess some other people have discussed on that. In one class I took, the work was submitted straight to an online plagiarism checker.

There may be software, there may be honest effort but plagiarism is something which needs a transparent approach. I am a green horn who has a lot to learn but I try to work honestly in my research outputs. However, in India I find plagiarism is taken quite lightly and persons brag about papers where they have plagiarized liberally. This happens because in a number of cases no proper action is taken. An effective anti plagiarism policy is needed and researchers need to be made aware of different facets of plagiarism before it is too late for them.

I am also a green horn like you Soumya, the best advise I ever got on plagiarism was, "If you will need, a plagiarism software to check whether you plagiarized, then you probably did plagiarize." This helped me to write my own stuff, paraphrase and quote. I quote liberally, It's better to receive a complaint that you had too many references than that you plagiarized.

Edmond that is a healthy way of looking at research as per my standards. And that was a good advice.

@Soumya, in Germany (my home country) people lose their PhD, MD etc. quite easily, if plagiarism could be verified. There are a number of German language Web sites gathering evidence in questionable cases. Recently, two ministers of the federal cabinet have been forced to resign because of unethical behaviour, i.e. plagiarism in their academic work.

Michael that is the difference between your country and mine. The approach taken in your country is the right one but in India I see academicians openly engaging in plagiarism and walking free by using their political clout or other means. The worst part of this process is that young talents grow up knowing that plagiarism is something which is trivial and can be practiced liberally.
