I am evaluating the isolated and combined effects of two stressors on physiological and biochemical parameters of fish. I analyzed different markers (eg antioxidant enzymes, DNA damage, histopathological damage...) and would like to know what kind of interactive effect occurs when fish are co-exposed to the two stressors. How can I determine if the interaction was additive, antagonistic or synergistic for these kind biomarkers??
Assuming the outcome parameters can be quantified then a conceptual approach could be as follows:
For stressor X measiure outcome outcome A (say change in parameter from control (quiescent state). call change positive whichever direction it takes).
For stressor Y measure outcome b similarly.
for combined stressors X,Y measure outcome c.
If c= a+b additive effect, if c >a+b synergy, if c < a+b antagonistic.
Statistical analysis would depend on measurement scales and models chosen.
do this seperately for each parameter.
