I need to work out out the latency model for a communication network. I need to calculate the end to end latency of the network.
Specifically, I need to know / explore how the latency varies when the distance between source and destination changes. What is the effect of placing intermediate hops closely or distantly? I mean how latency varies with the increase in the distance between the hops / source-sink?
I would appropriate if someone can provide me document / link describing the relationship about the impact of varying distance between source and destination on the latency.

This is a particular issue of developing a worst case scenario. You want to find the limit of behaviour, and then you will know if your network could meet or not some applications requirements.
You could have an experimental approach and send a time stamped "probe packet", and look at the receiving time stamp.
Can you explain what access you have to this network?
Is it a protocol study, or a real measurable transmission?

As much as I know, latency is not a constant value, but depends on the current state of the network (routers) through which your packets are transmitted. You can compute (or better, establish by trying) an average latency between two points (nodes) in the network. I have not done such experiments, but this is how I expect these things could be done. Textbooks say that the theoretical "round trip time" between NY and LA is little less that 50 ms, but practically, they take 100 ms.
